The challenge
Horses and farm equipment still change hands over phone calls, Facebook groups and hand-shake deals — with no verified buyers, no disclosure standard and no record of what was agreed. Off-the-shelf auction plugins could not handle timed bidding, bid increments, reserve logic, seller verification or the trust requirements of a five-figure private sale.
02
Our approach
We designed and engineered the platform end to end: a real-time auction engine with timed lots, bid increments, anti-snipe extensions and reserve handling; buyer and seller accounts with verification; structured listing creation with mandatory health and condition disclosures; watchlists, notifications and bid history; and an admin layer for approving lots, monitoring live sales and settling results. The interface was art-directed to feel like a national marketplace rather than a classifieds board — editorial typography, real barn photography and a browsing experience that works from a phone in a field.
03
The outcome
A production marketplace running live auctions across Canada, with legally binding bids, transparent seller disclosures and a platform that can scale into new livestock and agricultural categories without a rebuild.
Design decisions
Three choices that made the difference.
A real auction engine, not an auction plugin
Timed lots, minimum bid increments, reserve prices, proxy bidding and anti-snipe time extensions were all built from scratch against a live database, so a lot closing at 8:00 behaves the same for every bidder regardless of connection speed or device. Bid state is authoritative on the server; the browser only ever renders it.
Trust designed into the listing itself
A private-sale horse is a five-figure decision made from photographs. Sellers complete a structured disclosure — age, height, discipline, soundness, vetting, temperament, media — before a lot can go live, so every listing answers the same questions and buyers compare like with like instead of chasing sellers for basics.
Two products in one platform
Buyers get browsing, watchlists, bid history and outbid notifications. Sellers get listing creation, lot status and results. Administrators get lot approval, live sale monitoring and settlement. Each role sees a purpose-built interface rather than one generic dashboard with permissions bolted on.
What the site was built to be found for
Positioned for the category itself — online horse auction Canada, equine marketplace, farm and agricultural equipment auctions — where the platform is the destination and organic search feeds both sides of the marketplace: consignors listing lots and buyers hunting them.
Where we would take it next
Extending into scheduled sale events with catalogue exports, buyer financing partners, and expanding the same auction core into additional livestock and agricultural equipment categories.
What we built
- —Custom timed-auction engine with increments, reserves and anti-snipe extensions
- —Buyer and seller accounts with verification and role-based access
- —Structured listing builder with mandatory disclosure fields and media upload
- —Live bidding interface with bid history, watchlists and outbid notifications
- —Administrative console for lot approval, sale monitoring and settlement
- —Editorial marketing pages — auction rules, our story, resources — for organic acquisition
Responsive build
The same site, engineered for the phone in your customer's hand.
Tap-to-call in the header, a quote action always in reach, and images sized for mobile data. The mobile view is not a shrunken desktop — it is the primary design.
